Our aim is to provide an insight into how our music was written, performed and recorded.
We have released four albums since 2001, culminating in the completion of our most recent album 'Take It to the Bridge' in January 2009. Tracks from that album as well as the earlier albums will be available here to download for free. There will also be music and video featuring the band posted here that will not be available anywhere else.
We hope you will enjoy and support our music.

In the end though it’s pretty catchy stuff that creeps up on you with some deftly poppy hooks, which is surprising as the general tone of the album is smooth soul-jazz with the occasional outing of funk & swing. The dozen self-penned/arranged/produced tracks cover a wide range, with Raymond’s sax and Gary Alesbrook’s flugel horn superbly matched on the tight funk of the title track, Richie Blake’s bass popping nicely underneath and Sarah Davies’s gospel haunted vocal on ‘Lead Me to the Water’ both highlights. There’s even a touch of Quincy Jones from time to time, notably the lush and slinky soul of ‘Brief Encounter’.

'Why' video

'Why' featuring Kelly G

Another track and video from the new album. The blue screen in some of the shots is a part of a film technique called chroma key, where you shoot against a solid green or blue background and then it is relatively easy to remove and replace with an alternative. The whole of Sin City was shot this way.

This video was shot all in HD using Sony Z1 cameras.

'Take It to the Bridge' Video

'Take It to the Bridge' video

This is the video of the title track from the new album. We've carried on the idea of the comic strip with most of the footage being 'de-saturated' and color corrected to exaggerate the black & white tones. Video also features Cliff playing some fantastic guitar 'licks' and Richie & Steve laying down a lovely seductive 'Purdie Shuffle' style rhythm.

The comic book lyrics are still there and they tell the story of a groupie / fan coming on to one of the band. Happens all the time, especially to Steve (the piano player)!!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v3.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dac34aa1a9878f847%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331084183%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D3874B2CD8B55908626B494078C4A81FE4BA4DDC4.284724A947DCE84EC8876BCE0B14D22B2C15224A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dac34aa1a9878f847%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DHQOksWPQqxlqUZ-aZKCxxxpljv0&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://drsaxmusic.blogspot.com/2009/04/tender-touch-official-video.html' title=''Tender Touch' Music for me is a living moment in time that should capture the spirit and essence of the now and hopefully with these live recordings we've captured some special moments.

This song features another great vocal from Sarah and some nice understated muted trumpet from Gary.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v5.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dd35ed76395d449e8%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331084183%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7702021B8D194B987550466562A02FD6C33BE265.50EF6E194169AFF780C90B9E376775537F805C55%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dd35ed76395d449e8%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DVAl496ANpt_IA_SXd6ohgefrfeE&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://drsaxmusic.blogspot.com/2009/03/tender-touch-live-recording-march-09.html' title=''Tender Touch' This is also one of the tracks from the new album but played in a very different way. This is much more laid back and without the multiple vocals, flutes and saxophones of the original.

Steve can be seen and heard playing his 'cajon' in this track, I believe it means box in Spanish and inside can be found guitar strings and sleigh bells(!) makes a great sound though.

Sarah sings beautifully as always and Gary plays a lyrical and ultra smooth flugel solo which probably inspired the laid back feel to the whole track.

Hope you like it!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v6.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D6c36a82bc361ca81%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331084183%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6D887885A5810BE0FE27C693FB817ED9CE0ADC65.2D63899FD79E8942F295539022DCB75CBCF1FEFD%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D6c36a82bc361ca81%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dp6YiWrsrk7k8wHJVzkLZUoadLC8&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://drsaxmusic.blogspot.com/2009/03/lead-me-to-water-live-recording-march.html' title=''Lead Me to the Water' Cliff: guitar; Steve Wilson: percussion; Steve Williams: piano; Paul: sax; Gary: trumpet & flugelhorn and Sarah: vocals. The sound engineer was Tony Hobden who recorded the session to Pro Tools. We recorded 5 tracks in total and each one went down in two takes.

Because we were recording in a really ambient space, Steve our drummer used a percussion based set-up with a 'Cajon' providing the kick drum type sound. The funny thing about our association with this song is the writing credit... Raymond / Kay... the funny thing being that my father was a musician and also a band leader and the name of his band was: The Raymond Kaye Orchestra! I like that, my Dad's band name lives on!

Sarah delivers another lovely vocal interpretation on this track and there is also some fine acoustic guitar work from Cliff who is rarely heard on acoustic. What a waste! We recorded the guitar in my studio at home... for the technically interested: using my Neve preamp, Neve compressor, a Neumann mic going into an Apogee Rosetta and then into Pro Tools. Really lovely playing from Cliff, complements Sarah beautifully.

The drums and percussion were played by Steve and recorded in Supersonix. He put down the main drum part and then asked if I wanted some percussion as well? I had to leave that afternoon and he and Tony (engineering) recorded multiple tracks of various percussion which sounded awesome. We were going to record a conga part as well but we ran out of time. Steve is a bit of a specialist in latin as you can probably hear.

The bass on the track is Richie who is consistently wonderful, ever inventive and always seeking perfection... you can't really ask for more.

Drums & percussion: Steve Wilson
Bass: Richie Blake
Guitar: Cliff Moore
Rhodes: Paul Raymond
Backing vocals: Sarah Davies
Lead vocal: Sarah Davies
Alto flutes: Paul Raymond
Engineer: Tony Hobden
Production & mix: Paul Raymond

Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/190296026/Dr_Sax..._You_Walk_By.mp3

Talking to You

'Talking to You' (featuring Sarah Davies)
(from the album 'Take It to the Bridge' 2009)

Another song featuring our lovely Welsh songstress Sarah. She recorded this just before her birthday in December 2008 when she was still all of 18. One of the things that I love about Sarah's voice is her distinctiveness; the tone and the phrasing make her easily and instantly identifiable and as well, she has a rare gift for bringing out the feeling in the lyrics, I'm so glad that we found her!

Lexie wrote the first part of the lyrics to this tune and we've been waiting to record it for some time. This was another of the tracks that we recorded in the converted church studio; having abandoned the main live space as a band, Steve put down the drums in the sound proofed drum booth and Richie and I recorded our parts in the control room.

There's a lot of alto flute in this song and there is an all instrumental version of the tune with alto flute lead but I do like the vocal version.

As a sax player, I haven't said very much yet about saxophones, so I'll start now... the sax on this track is a soprano, once described as 'the sax that should never have been invented' probably because they're more difficult to play, tuning and tone are harder to achieve. On the last Dr Sax album I played a Yamaha but since then I've switched to a Yanagisawa. It's a little more mellow and I use a copper neck with a Phil Barone mouthpiece. I play my soprano every day and it's a joy.

The backing vocals as ever feature Abby, Danni & Lexie (pictured with Richie above).

Drums: Steve Wilson
Bass: Richie Blake
Rhodes & Paul is a great singer and he was first choice to sing this song, only problem was he's moved some miles away but as he has his own studio, the easy solution was to send him a backing track and for him to record the vocal at his place.

He recorded several versions of the vocal at 96Khz, 32bits, for those who might want to know, which did present a bit of a problem as our Pro Tools system would not accept 32bit files(!) but once it was all converted, we had file compatability and the track could be mixed and mastered.

The main female backing vocal is Abby, but Lexie and Danni are also singing the angelic harmonies.

Having mentioned St Georges above, I would add that the acoustic piano was also recorded there. The acoustic piano is a very expensive Steinway concert grand and at the end of a long day recording other people and their songs, I happened to have the backing track on my ipod and with the mics still set up from earlier I quickly recorded to the backing track.

Drums: Steve Wilson
Bass: Richie Blake
Rhodes & Piano: Paul Raymond
Backing vocals: Abby Tweddle, Danni Douel & Lexie Raymond
Lead vocal: Paul Richards
Soprano sax: Paul Raymond
Engineer: Ace Taylor
Production & mix: Paul Raymond

Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/184320621/Dr_Sax..._What_About_You.mp3

Happen Together

'Happen Together' (featuring Steve Williams, top picture)
(from the album: 'Take It to the Bridge' 2009)

A swinging piece of ersatz jazz that I wrote to enable me to incorporate some sax section parts. Rhythm section was recorded in Supersonix with everything else being overdubbed at a later date. Steve Williams (above) one of the two original keyboard players with the band contributed this great vocal. He has been working over the last couple of years with UK R & B star, Jamelia and his vocal stylings and techniques have clearly been influenced and benefited from the experience.

Backing vocals feature, Abby, Danni & Lexie... Abby (pictured below Steve)

The tenor sax solo that features briefly at the end was part of the first recording session,. Beth has since gone on to sign a major deal with one of the 'big 4' record companies, Universal and as well as chart success she has also sung with the legend Bert Bacharach at the BBC Electric Proms (pictured above).

As with the other tracks on the album, it was all recorded at Supersonix, with Beth and the guitar parts being added again some 6 months after the rhythm tracks were recorded.

Kit Morgan played all of the rhythm guitar tracks but the lead guitar was performed by another awesome guitar player, Kirby, who previously played with Curved Air and enjoyed chart success with his own band Stretch.

I had spent the last year performing with Kirby in a blues band and I invited him to play solos on two tracks. Kirby arrived at the studio with a very old Fender combo, his Fender Strat for all of the slide guitar and his Les Paul. Our wonderful resident engineer, Tony Hobden, set up a couple of condensors and a dynamic mic on the cab and a second condensor just under 1 metre away, as you can see from the photo above. The final sound was a mix of the different mics.

If you would like to see footage of Kirby warming up as well as a more detailed look at the mic set-up with Tony discussing the mix, please check out the accompanying video here.

Backing vocals on this track are supplied by the gospel choir but also by Sedge who was the original lead vocalist with the band.

http://rapidshare.com/files/178545712/Dr_Sax..._Stay_Awhile.mp3

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v23.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D6e35d4489ec38957%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331084183%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D80FB6DB5020AEB3BCDF2B28E8C3533D64E560C2D.770E22DAE95967CE5B79DC00614BB4D85E026C8D%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D6e35d4489ec38957%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DkIlG74on2iVHtYefAKeND6SwnBU&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Crescent Moon

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The studio was booked out to another musician and we were booked as his backing band for the afternoon but as it turned out he didn't have anything planned, so we offered to put something down for him that he could add to later, which he subsequently decided not to use(!) so we did!

The drums, bass and sax all went down live and this is the second take. There were a couple of dumbeks (turkish drums) in the studio and Steve overdubbed these and later on I added the keyboard parts.

The guitar parts were added another six months later when guitar genius Kit Morgan came down to the studio for a day to add all of his guitar parts for the album. This absolutely stunning guitar work was overdubbed live in the control room in one take, a truly awesome performance.

http://rapidshare.com/files/178545710/Dr_Sax..._Crescent_Moon.mp3

Lucky 13

'Lucky 13'
(from the album: 'Take It to the Bridge' 2009)

This was recorded in 'Supersonix', (2nd picture above) Tony Hobden's first studio where we recorded all of the Gospel's album, two years previously. As was usually the case, the recording started out with keyboards, bass & drums. Bass & drums recorded together in the live room with keyboards recorded at the same time but in the control room.

There were very clear intentions with this track, firstly the basic structure is based around a 13 bar idea which has it's roots in the classic blues sequence but with a variation at the end taking it away from blues (chord wise) and up to 13 bars in length.

The second intention was to try and capture a 1970's / Billy Cobham / Spectrum type groove. I hope that we got some of the way with that and out of deep respect we did put the rhodes electric piano through a ring modulator for the solo!

Great solo by Cliff on guitar and great bass & drums as always!

Things always seem to go in threes for us and as you can hear Richie (the bass player) saying at the end of the track, this particular version is take 3. Each take was actually quite different and I might do an alternative mix of one of the others someday.

Drums & percussion: Steve Wilson
Bass: Richie Blake
Guitar: Cliff Moore
Rhodes: Paul Raymond
Alto saxophone: Paul Raymond
Engineer: Tony Hobden
Production & We wasted most of the morning in the main live room, which was far too live but it gave us the opportunity to really get to work out the structure and the grooves. All three songs were new to Richie (bass), Steve (drums) and Cliff (guitar) but we all had chord charts and we are used to this highly spontaneous way of working... it helps keep things fresh!

This particular track was really tough for Steve in particular... the rhythm is similar to a style known as the 'Purdie Shuffle', basically a 12/8 feel but it is very slow and very difficult to keep steady. We eventually got it in three takes but I seem to remember Steve sweating blood!

Cliff (pictured above with his favorite Strat) plays some lovely and very tasteful guitar throughout the track. A bit of a showcase for him really!

Everything that we record is tracked to Pro Tools and after we put down the basic rhythm tracks I overdubbed some of the sax parts including a lead line for the eventual lead vocalist, though at this stage, we didn't know who that was going to be.

All of this took place in April 2008 and by September, everything else, backing vocals, extra keyboards, sax section, percussion had all been recorded and mixed but still without any lead vocal. We actually tried 4 different singers but none had the right feel or attitude to the song. Then in October we met Sarah Davies (pictured above) who was just perfect and finished the whole track in three takes. Sarah was just 18 years old when she recorded this track but she already has a sound and style that is totally her. What I really enjoy about the composing process is the way it consumes me. Life goes on around me but the ideas for developing the melody, the chords, the arrangement are buzzing around my head all day, when I wake up and when I go to sleep.

I sat down at my piano in the morning, knowing that I wanted to write something new. The melody came first with something similar to the final chords and I knew that I had to record the idea there and then otherwise I would probably forget it. So I recorded the verse melody and the chord structure and that was the start. For the next section I knew that I wanted the melody to climb and develop emotionally and that came pretty quickly as well but I didn't find the chords for a couple of days, and then I woke up with them in my head. This is what I mean by the way the song consumes me, I went to sleep wondering how and woke up with the answer.

I was on a real and natural high for days as a result of this tune. Lyrics were supplied by my long term collaborator Steve Fowler and Steve Williams, (pictured above at the piano), our hugely talented keyboard player and a part of the band from the beginning, delivered the most perfect vocal.

Once I had the song structure, chords & melody worked out, I dropped the Pro Tools session round to Richie, who came up with the most perfect bass line. Check out the video clip below to hear Richie's comments on how he came up with it.

Hope you like the song:

http://rapidshare.com/files/176951741/Dr_Sax..._Brief_Encounter__vocal_.mp3

'Brief Encounter' (instrumental version)

This is the original version of the song that I recorded, before the lyrics were written.
Features:
Bass: Richie Blake
Keyboards: Paul Raymond
Soprano sax: Paul Raymond
Alto flutes: Paul Raymond
Backing vocals: Abby Tweddle, Danni Douel & The flugel horn solo is performed by Gary Alesbrook (pictured above), backing vocals by Abby, Danni (pictured above) and Lexie. And finally, the lead vocal is by Kelly Griggs.

If you're wondering what the 'middle way' might be, check out the Bhuddist connection!

Drums, bass and keys were recorded live in a newly set up recording studio based in an old church. We started out in the main live room, which Tony, our sound engineer had raved about, saying what a fantastic natural reverb there was. Unfortunately, fantastic though it was, it was too much and we couldn't work with it, we couldn't hear ourselves yet alone each other, so after wasting the best part of three hours, we hastily set up the drums in the tiny drum booth and the bass and keys in the control room. After all that wasted time, we nailed the basic rhythm track on the first take.

Richie took away the session and re-recorded the bass part and we added guitar parts in the studio and some of the sax parts. Below is a video of Richie talking about the bass part.

http://rapidshare.com/files/176963576/Dr_Sax...Take_It_to_the_Bridge.mp3

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v17.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dc221e44c4b1e4de8%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331084183%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D41C01CC315553D67D59458A37D424C525DA5C97E.5640DD9476047FE1D7711435B0C7F802A628C3E0%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dc221e44c4b1e4de8%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DE9ZFtNGAMxa6yO8NaQRcF3OGfuc&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Welcome - December - 2008

Welcome to the Dr Sax blog.

The intention is to provide everyone and anyone interested in our music with an insight into how it was written, performed and recorded.

We have written and recorded four albums since 2001, culminating in the completion of our most recent album 'Take It to the Bridge' in January 2009.
